DEVELOPMENT & Peace - CARITAS CANADA: Building a world of justice

We are a democratic movement for international solidarity that supports partners in the Global South in the pursuit of alternatives to unjust social, political, economic and environmental structures.

We educate Canadians about the causes of the impoverishment of peoples and to mobilize them to act for change.

Stand for the Land

Development and Peace — Caritas Canada is beginning a new campaign cycle this year. Taking off from our Orientation Assembly in June 2022 and inspired by Pope Francis’s October 2021 address to the World Meeting of Popular Movements, we have chosen Create Hope as our guiding theme for the next five years.

To create hope in this first year, we will Stand for the Land in solidarity with our sisters and brothers who are defending their territories in the Global South by protecting their lands and waters, the environment and human life..

Laudato Si

Laudato Si (Praise Be to You) is the second encyclical of Pope Francis, published May 24th, 2015. The encyclical has the subtitle "on care for our common home". In it, the Pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming, and calls all people of the world to take "swift and unified global action."

KAIROS BLANKET EXERCISE

The KAIROS Blanket Exercise (KBE) has been a program of KAIROS for twenty-five years. In 1996, in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples,  the Aboriginal Rights Coalition (which became part of KAIROS in 2001) worked with Indigenous elders and educators to develop an experiential learning tool to narrate the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in a Canadian context.

NORTH AMERICAN SPIRITAN RACIAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE

We continue to update the Racial Justice Resource Page on the U.S. Spiritan website with new articles, videos and books as part of the continuing education process on race, identifying specific opportunities and actions to enrich our Spiritan mission and community life.

Synodality

Pope Francis formally opened a two-year process called a “synod on synodality” for the Catholic Church on Oct. 10, 2021.

The Synod presents an invitation to return to our sources and to engage freshly with the call of the Gospel today. Synodality invites us all to consider what the early Church’s practices of walking together in discipleship, community, unity in diversity, and Spirit-led transformation, might mean for the Church today.
