7 Keeping hope alive
In Fellini's film La Strada, a macho strongman
went from town to town performing feats of strength and daring. As he
burst chains asunder or swallowed an open flame, he was assisted by
his attractive and sensitive wife. She didn't fit in his world and he
often berated her.
In one town their arrival coincided with the
presence of a circus. The wife was befriended by the circus clown,
another marginalized soul. He often felt out of place but he clung to
the belief that his life had meaning. As he talked with his new
friend, he reassured her that everything in the world had a purpose,
"even this little stone" and he bent to pick it up from the
path. "Oh what is that?" she asked with a sudden eagerness.
"Ah, if I knew that I would be God." he replied.
The light in her eyes dimmed but did not go out.
And she kept the little stone as a symbol of her hope.
