6 Woman or man but fully alive
We know the power of slogans, especially when
blazoned on placards in the streets. When TV cameras are about, they
tend to be in English, even when every other background sign and
symbol voices another culture.
For someone who lived in the 1960s, the phrase
"I have a dream" recalls a whole world. Another prominent
example of the time (would have to be reworded today) "The glory
of God is man fully alive".
Slogans are powerful but they have their limits.
They precipitate closure and rob us of balance. Irenaeus had a little
more to say about the glory of God, seen in human fulfilment.
"The glory of God is when we are fully alive;
and we come to life in the contemplation
of God."
(Gloria Dei, homo vivens
et vita hominis, visio Dei)
