4. Now walking, now leaping
Are you more a prophet than a philosopher?
Prophets and philosophers are partners in trying to convey the truth
to as many people as possible.
The philosophers I learned from were
metaphysicians. So that everyone would understand, they stripped away
the things that were considered accidental, things material and
historical. They felt that, by going beyond appearances, they would
arrive at the essential reality, which everyone could grasp, and
subsequently reclothe according to their own tradition.
Prophets are different. They have been taken over
and their witness abounds in traces of flesh and blood, of story and
symbol. They try to reach us by sounding echoes deep in our humanity.
Often they wound us and we usually treat them badly.
After Blaise Pascal's death, a piece of paper
(dated 23 November 1654) was found sewn into his jacket, on which was
written: "Fire. God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not
of the philosophers and scholars. Certainty. Certainty. Feeling. Joy. Peace."
