25 Upstairs downstairs
The Slave House on the island of Gorée off the coast of
Senegal must be one of the starkest memorials of how cruelly we can
treat each other. Upstairs are all the signs of the traders
genteel living. Below in the darkness is the evidence of unbelievable
degradation and suffering. Prior to departure the slaves were herded
through a dark corridor and passed through a gate called "Journey
of no return" (Voyage sans retour). Soon the seascape
stretching to the horizon was a demoralising reminder of their
dreadful isolation with all hope gone.
The Slave House was built more than 250 years ago. Slavery has been
abolished but serious separation still prevails and is enshrined in
modern living. It is not just that well off people live in residences
that are gated and guard-dogged. "Exclusive" describes what
is most sought after and carries no hint of reproach.
In our world there are those who have things and those who dont
have things. There is a river of estrangement that runs through our
society, that sometimes overflows into looting if law and order ever
break down. Todays heroes must cross social frontiers, become
respectful listeners and apostles of the human family.
Building servants quarters for servants may be a good idea, if
it is a mark of respect, if it is part of taking seriously the one
who said; "Here am I among you as one who serves." Luke
22:27
