24 What if things dont work out?
Was there ever a time when we so fiercely fought to keep our options
open. We pencil things in. We slip in little escape clauses like
"all things being equal" or "well confirm this
later", which usually means "unless I get a better offer".
If we commit ourselves in advance we might miss something. And
were not prepared to take this chance. Were afraid to
take the risk of giving our word and keeping it. We may say words of
commitment, but we have now become satisfied if we can achieve a
sincerity sound. Everything remains negotiable.
The flight from firm commitment is devastating for daily living. What
used to be firm ground is now a quicksand. Marriage vows, religious
vows are sometimes merely vague statements of intent.
Thank God, there are those who keep their word through thick and thin.
When things dont work out, we discover we have a companion in
Gethsemani. And seeing things through starts to make sense.
