Welcome to the site of the TransCanada Province of the Spiritans. We are a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation of over three thousand members, founded in 1703. Our missions are spread worldwide. While we may be found involved in many diverse ministries, we have dedicated ourselves to working with the poor and in those situations where the Church has difficulty in finding ministers. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site and that while browsing you will keep us in your prayers. May God bless you.

Who me?

A series of reflections to help you count your blessings

19 Half remembered movies

For most movies I don’t remember the whole story. But snatches of it are liable to come back without notice. Like this one from the film "Oscar Romero".

When he became a bishop Oscar Romero was well connected. He was welcome in influential circles. The powerful looked to him with respect. This changed when , with the help of some of his priests, he began to side with the poor.

He began to speak for those who dared not raise their voice. They had tried but they had been trampled into submission. Now they were afraid. Afraid to speak out, afraid to complain and especially afraid to vote. Slowly and carefully it was explained that they would be safe, that buses would collect them, that the journey would hold no risk. And as the buses started out, hope was rising, faces were lighting up, the threshold of a new day was coming into view.

Then the military stopped the buses and refused to let them pass.

The fragile confidence of the people which had been so slowly and so painstakingly rekindled was once again being snuffed out in a single act of arbitrary repression. Oscar Romero was crushed. He couldn’t take it anymore. There on the side of the road he fell to his knees and he prayed: "Lord I can’t, you must."
