Welcome to the site of the TransCanada Province of the Spiritans. We are a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation of over three thousand members, founded in 1703. Our missions are spread worldwide. While we may be found involved in many diverse ministries, we have dedicated ourselves to working with the poor and in those situations where the Church has difficulty in finding ministers. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site and that while browsing you will keep us in your prayers. May God bless you.

Who me?

A series of reflections to help you count your blessings

18 A virtue for the 21st century

We know that love is the lynchpin of living. Without it everything falls apart. But we also speak of other important virtues. Pope John Paul II has suggested solidarity as the virtue of the 21st century. He sees it as the virtue that can undo social evil. It involves unasked for challenges. Extending the family feeling to outsiders is not easy. It usually brings trouble.

The Samaritan traveller who found the unidentified man half-dead by the side of the road was "moved with compassion when he saw him" (Lk 10,33) Solidarity stirred in his heart but it needed to find practical expression if it was to survive. The priest and the levite who passed by were not without human feeling, but they lived under a discipline that favoured what was safe and shied away from real risk.

Saint-Exupéry reminds us that it is in placing our stone that we help build the world. May we rise to some Samaritan-style solidarity.
