16 Recognising Jesus
We say recognition dawns upon us. The face is
vaguely familiar, the personal movements have an unmistakeable
character and there is something about the voice. The disciple
whom Jesus loved was the first to recognise the stranger on the shore.
"It is the Lord." Peter reacted immediately and later
during breakfast the other disciples knew who it was. They didnt
have to ask.
Simon of Cyrene had a rough and tumble life. He
was worried about life after death. He didnt know what to
expect. But as it turned out it wasnt altogether strange. There
was something familiar about that face. He didnt remember the
smile, but he had definitely looked into those eyes before. Then it
dawned on him and he began to run forward exclaiming: "Hey, I
know you, I helped you carry your cross."
"And eternal life is this:
to know you, the only true God
and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
