14 Keepers of the flame
I never expected to be paying a visit to the San
Diego Family History Centre on fine day in April 1999 to begin a
search for traces of Peter Kelly, who came to the US in the previous
century, married a widow in (from?) Los Angeles and died (in
California?) before World War I. The explanation is that my brother
Fred had just arrived from Ireland for a short holiday. He and our
cousin Seamus take a lively interest in the family tree.
My interest in the past is maybe more anecdotal
and sentimental. I treasure little incidents in the family story. In
1966, I remember Fred and I visited the National Archives in
Washington DC. The statement carved over the door impressed me
greatly. "The past is prologue."
One thing about Fred, he doesn't get stuck in the
past. Now that he has retired from lecturing in French Literature at
Galway University, he has begun something new. He's learning Chinese.
