Jesus Speaks to the Women Standing By
Lord, I'm not sure that I understand
What Luke meant when he told us about this incident.
Was it a rebuke?
Or more, perhaps, a warning?
Was it that they were standing apart from it all,
Refusing to admit that You were suffering what they deserved?
Would they not acknowledge their own sin?
Maybe I am just like those women.
I can't stand suffering.
My heart goes out to far-off victims of oppression,
To starving Asians and maltreated blacks.
I sympathize from a safe distance - in comfort.
Then from out of their suffering, I hear Your voice;
"Weep not for me but for yourself."
At first I'm just confused.
Then it comes home to me that I am a sinner
And I begin to see that those who suffer are, in a way, much better off
Than those who make them suffer.
Lord help me to realize
that a helping hand extended to those who suffer is extended to you.
