VI
Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus
Deep down You knew that you had some good friends
But just then it didn't seem that way.
It wasn't just that they weren't there;
Worse still, they didn't understand.
It seemed that no one cared.
And then that woman pushed through the crowd
And lovingly wiped Your face with a towel.
Thank God for that woman, Lord.
Things are still much the same.
We still stand by as people die,
Nobody wants to be involved in such a murky business as killing.
To intervene would mean trouble, it would mean risk,
It would threaten our security.
We still don't care.
People with cars don't care about those who have no cars.
People with houses don't care about those who are homeless.
People with money, people who are well fed, people who are in good
health, all sorts of people...just don't care.
Lord, all too often I don't care.
Somewhere in my life let there be one act
by which I risk myself for You,
One act in the spirit of that woman.
