Welcome to the site of the TransCanada Province of the Spiritans. We are a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation of over three thousand members, founded in 1703. Our missions are spread worldwide. While we may be found involved in many diverse ministries, we have dedicated ourselves to working with the poor and in those situations where the Church has difficulty in finding ministers. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site and that while browsing you will keep us in your prayers. May God bless you.

Spiritan
Novitiate
Opens
in Chicago

On August 15th of 2008, the Spiritans of North America and the Caribbean opened a new International Novitiate in Chicago. The Novitiate Year is the second stage of formation for those who are contemplating Religious life. It is a special year of reflection and discernment during which time the "novice" in conjunction with novice directors and spiritual directors must determine whether or not the novice indeed does have an authentic Religious vocation.

Our Spiritan Novitiate is located in the parish of St. Mary Magdalene in Chicago. Because of the presence of the Chicago Theological Union in the city, there are a number of Religious Congregations which have decided to set up Novitiates there. This has lead to the creation of a very helpful and dynamic Inter-Novitiate programme where novices from both male and female Congregations can meet on a regular basis to explore topics in Religious life common to them.

The Novitiate year is a time of intense prayer and spiritual guidance as well as a time of deepening one's knowledge of the Spiritans; our founders, our history, our charism, and our ministries worldwide. At the end of the Novitiate year in August of 2009, the novices will take first vows known as "temporary" vows, and hopefully after a few years, final vows (permanent or "perpetual").

This year, we are blessed to have five novices participating in the Novitiate, one from the U.S.A., two from Haiti and two from Canada. They are under the able direction of the Novice Master, Fr. Brandon Nguyen, CSSp and the Assistant Director, Fr. Barney Kelly, CSSp.

Novitiate News

First Retreat

To start the Novitiate year, the group went on a week long retreat at St. Benedict's Abby, Benet Lake, Wisconsin. The beautiful setting and the peace of the late summer evenings helped to create an atmosphere of prayer and tranquility conducive to starting the Novitiate process.
