St.
Joseph's Parish, West Hill, Ontario
When
I think of St. Joseph's parish, the text of scripture that comes
to mind is the verse in ACTS 2,9: Parthians,
Medes, Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the
parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene... .
This multi-cultural description of Jerusalem at the time of
Pentecost, could well be quoted to convey a picture of the
multi-cultural, multi-national and multi-ethnic composition of
the St. Joseph's community as we enter the next millennium. As in
many other parts of the archdiocese of Toronto, the parish
community has changed its face from being predominantly Celtic
and Caucasian to being West Indian, East Indian, Filipino,
Chinese, South American, East African, and countries in between,
all of which makes for a tapestry of nations akin to the
composition of the people of Canada.

One
must remember that the parish founded in 1854, was built on
the backs of the Irish people whose great faith and reverence
for church motivated them to give of their energies and
resources and build the first church, albeit a very small one
by today's standards but adequate for their needs, at Highland
Creek. They called it St.Joseph's. Located in the south part
of Scarborough, the parish is bounded on the east by the Rouge
River, on the west by Highland Creek, to the south by Lake
Ontario, and to the north by Sheppard avenue.
|
The
first church has been rebuilt, added on to and changed to meet
the growing needs of the expanding parish population. While in
1854 there were less than 200 families in the parish, now in 1999
there are approximately 3,000 families. The most recent
renovations, blessed an May 1999, were the result of a crying
need to accommodate the multiplication of ministries,
organizations, committees and activities within the parish.
Bricks and mortar can build the church, but only people can build
community and this is what has happened at St. Joseph's. The
people make the community. This sense on the part of the people
of belonging to the parish is noticed and remarked on by visitors
to the parish.
